Pango In Action
Thanks to Sankarshan Mukhopadhyay who recently provided a nice example of how far the freedesktop community has come in supporting complex text such as Indic scripts. I simply copied his post and pasted it into abiword and got the following.

This was just copied from Sankarshan's blog post in firefox and pasted into abiword-2.6. Congrats to the pango hackers and Tomas Frydrych who made this "just work" :-) (Plus it's a nice example of the quality of our X11 clipboard support :-)

Update:
Changed the screen shot to show the font Lohit Bengali

It'd be very nice if such screenshots weren't an advertisement for Times New Roman in the future. There are lots of FLOSS groups that do good work on fonts, and they're just as critical for a good FLOSS text stack as the code bits.

And former Windows users need to be educated there is something else than Arial and TNR in the fonts world.

Good Point. I changed the font to Lohit Bengali and made a new screenshot.

Thank you very much. It's appreciated. We need to foster more FLOSS font designers, and the way to do it is to give them the kuddos they deserve.

And why does the font point size field look editable, but it is not?

There is a fairly large corpus at http://www.stat.wisc.edu/~deepayan/Bengali/WebPage/bengali.html. And oh!! thanks for Tomas Frydrych as well :)

It doesn't seem to work correctly when you drag and drop from firefox. At least, not into gedit. middle click paste works wonderfully, but drag and drop give a stack of unintelligible characters. I don't know if this is firefox or gedit's fault.

Drag and drop into AbiWord works well

Submit a bug report to gedit.

Dragging and dropping that Indic text from firefox into abiword works well :-)
