Latex rules!
To follow up on Marc's post,  Google Summer of Code students really wanted to work on our Latex exporter. I think we had 10 applications to enhance that feature but we had none to work on ODF.

Another example that Words != Action in the Open Source world.

Misunderstanding

I think there's a misunderstanding. Marc writes

However, many of the GSoC applicants do not already have F/OSS background.

Maybe because they are students :)

Yes, it is strange, however if I was student (I plan to start this autumn), I would choose ODF support. I have nothing much against OOXML as tech standard (except from a fact that it is unfinished and messy), but I really don't use or have any contacts with people who want to use OOXML exclusively.

So I think you guys color it too much :)

I guess actions follow words

And students apply what they consider developers will support. Just take a look how koffice has two accepted apps or ODF support, one for MS old binary format support and none for OOXML.

That just proves the visibility of ODF in the Academic world (where students are recruited) is low. That proves nothing about ODF in the Open Source World.

Students logically chose to focus on formats that had a huge joe average visibility (OOXML, due to the MS marketing machine) or a huge academic visibility (Latex). They'll discover when they leave university the huge Enterprise and Administration IT space (what funds OSS right now).

IMHO the little Gnome Office war on ODF is short-sighted. The entities that care less about ODF are also the entities least susceptible to contribute to Gnome Office development.
