Netbooks on GNOME radar?
I read with interest Chris Blizzards post and I scanned through the GUADEC talks. One topic which did not seem to be much talked about were netbooks like the EEE PC. This new market segment expects to have 10 million units this year with hundreds of millions over the next few years. A large fraction of these will run Linux.

Is it just me or does this not seem a like HUGE opportunity for GNOME? We've concentrated on making a simple, easy to use desktop, why don't we have hackers jumping up and and down with excitement at the real opportunity to put our technology into the hands of hundreds of millions of people? Isn't this what we've wanted to do from the start?

This is certainly a direction we're keen on taking AbiWord + http://abicollab.net.

Is there a cabal somewhere that is plotting how to make use of this massive opportunity that I'm not part of?

I must admit I'm mystified that at this moment when we finally have some genuine desktop traction, people are talking about decadence. Geeze lets make great apps and keep our desktop stable so ISV's will use us for their products.

My eee pc is rocking with ubuntu + gnome. It's only 4gb so I'm a bit limited, but I report bugs as I find them.

Here's hoping many developers love the netbook platform. As you say, it's a great, great place to make a serious impact.

Yeah, but it ships with something else than gnome (xfce or is it some random WM?). Why?

it ships with Xandros which is not really Free Software. It is a proprietarized version of an outdated Debian with an outdated version of KDE. ASUS couldn't have made a worse choice.

I think you are right - there's a great opportunity for GNOME on netbooks. Netbooks will end up reaching a really large audience and they would benefit from the GNOME experience.

I think the GNOME mobile work will end up helping the netbook experience as well.

As an Asus Eee PC user who has used both the default Xandros experience and Mandriva with GNOME, I think there's still work to be done in GNOME like designing applications to have as little as possible "extra" stuff on the screen (like in menus and toolbars) so that most of the real estate can be used for the app.

You know, it something that one would mention in the same breath as the mobile effort. Don't get me wrong, I am sure that developers has through long and hard before jumping into GTK+/GNOME 3.0 work, but one of the things that I notice isn't being talked about is where we has been with GTk+/Gnome 2.x.y... and where that gets quite ugly. It some ways, that kind of talk seems to be avoided... why I don't know.
