AbiWord back for Google Summer of Code in 2009
We're back and looking for students to mentor in AbiWord hacking for Google Summer of Code in 2009. Thanks Google! We really appreciate your support.

Here is a screencast of SVN AbiWord demonstrating Multipage view. The core of this feature was implemented by James Denton for his AbiWord GSoC 2008 project.

Warning 55 MB ogg!

This document is the 226 page RTF Specification, imported from RTF format.

Our list of suggested projects for 2009 is here. Feel free to suggest your own cool ideas too!

Glad to see AbiWord still progressing with fantastic updates. There is a bit of flickering but must be due to the video compression. One extremely minor (yet still annoying) drawing error is the page shadow not being uniform with the right side jutting out by a few pixels in the bottom right corner. I'll file a bug report shortly. Beautiful work. I Can't wait to see what comes of this years GSOC.

Martin, that's epic! I never tested it with a document more than 30 or 40 pages long. :-)

That shadow pixel bug annoyed me all summer. I had it marked as a "polish" issue on my todo list, but I ran out of time.

There is a little bit of flickering in normal use due to redraw, unfortunately. It might be worse in longer documents. I know AbiWord does double buffering, but I guess it's only per page.

Actually the flicker during redraws is real and showing 30 pages on the screen at once really demonstrates the effect very well.

James, we don't actually double buffer. I just added a GSoC project to implement an intelligent double buffer to reduce flicker. Are you interested in tackling that project this year? :-)

Hm... I just launched Abiword 2.6.6 and did not see this option anywhere.

This feature is only in the development version of AbiWord that will eventually become version 2.8

You have to compile SVN from source to see it right now.

Cheers

Martin

I tried it out in 2.7.1, it was awesome! (even if some parts were turned of/broken, like the settings menu..)
and the fact that it integrates so well with the gnome global menu makes it double up a gr8 piece of software. load time was that of a rocket (compared with the one in ubuntu's repo's)
